Back to the event

The ACROBA Hackathon 2024, hosted at Irish Manufacturing Research (IMR), brought together researchers, industry experts, and robotics enthusiasts to tackle real-world industrial challenges in a collaborative, hands-on environment. This innovative event highlighted the exciting potential of cutting-edge robotics technologies while fostering teamwork and problem-solving under time pressure.

The Hackathon wasn’t just about competing—it was about collaboration, innovation, and hands-on experience. Teams worked side-by-side to apply knowledge and creativity, experimenting with ROS technologies, grasping strategies, and machine vision to solve the challenge.

Participants benefited from mentorship, guidance, and a supportive learning environment provided by IMR and event partners. This collaborative setting was a unique platform to connect, learn, and gain exposure to the latest developments in robotics and automation.

Challenge description

ACROBA Hackathon Challenge: Demonstrating Advanced Robotic Manipulation with Industry 5.0

Context

Industry 5.0 emphasizes agile manufacturing, which requires flexible and adaptive solutions for the efficient handling of various objects. However, traditional robotic approaches often rely on reprogramming or re-optimization to accommodate varying object shapes, sizes, and weights—leading to inefficiencies.

To address this, ACROBA introduces a modular, goal-driven framework designed for robust pick-place tasks. This innovative approach enables both sequential and parallel activation of different robotic functions, significantly reducing the need for extensive hyperparameter tuning.

Objective

To evaluate the usability and effectiveness of ACROBA’s modular framework, we are organizing a Hackathon Challenge. The goal is to apply ACROBA to a novel and complex task involving the manipulation of metallic tubes, valves, and joints.

The ultimate aim of this Hackathon is to demonstrate ACROBA’s ability to handle this complex manipulation sequence without prior exposure to the task and without requiring task-specific adjustments.

Your Challenge

<Performance Evaluation>

The performance of your solution will be evaluated based on the following metrics:

  • Cycle Time (seconds): Time taken to complete the task.
  • Success Rate (%): Ratio between successful picks and the total number of parts in the bin.
  • Flexibility Rate (%): Number of times the system adapts to different parts using the same configuration.
  • Safety Score (points): Number of failures (e.g., dropped parts, collisions)
  • Placement Accuracy (mm): Difference between the desired stable placement and the actual part placement.
