A Thrilling Conclusion to the ACROBA Hackathon Series
The ACROBA Hackathon series reached an exciting conclusion with the organization of a Mega-Hackathon organized in collaboration by ROBOCOAST, BFH, VICOMTECH, and BIBA.
This two-day innovation marathon took place on October 15–16, 2024, at the Satakunta University of Applied Sciences (SAMK) in Pori, Finland. Participants were tasked with developing groundbreaking IT solutions while fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration and teamwork.
The Mega-Hackathon attracted 63 participants from diverse academic and professional backgrounds, representing a wide array of expertise and institutions. 8 universities from 4 different countries were represented (Finland, Spain, Germany, Italy). Participants brought a wealth of knowledge from multiple domains, including: Artificial Intelligence (AI) , Data Engineering and Data Science, Robotics, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, etc
This Mega-Hackathon served not only as a platform for technological innovation but also as a vibrant hub for international collaboration and knowledge exchange. The participants’ diverse skill sets and cultural perspectives enriched the event, making it a memorable milestone in the ACROBA initiative.
The 3 challenges
Gripper design and manufacturing
Participants were challenged to design gripper fingers able to grasp pieces in packed boxes, as well as to have precise regrasping.
After designing the part, each team had to 3D print it and then test it with metal pieces.
Validate robotic solutions in simulated industrial process in the Virtual Gym
This challenge focused on bin-picking, regrasping and assembly in virtual environment. The teams were challenged to propose solutions to the following issues:
- algorithm for localizing pieces cluttered in a container
- design grasping pose given object pose;
- algorithm for ranking the grasping order given multiple detected object poses.
- estimate piece orientation in the regrasping bin;
- designing the proper path for controlling the robot to insert the piece into the jig.
Installation and Integration of ACROBA platform and third-party modules
This challenge focused on the development of tools/wizards to support/enhance the installation of the ACROBA Platform and the integration of 3rd party software modules (ros packages, skills, primitives, libraries, …) into the ACROBA platform. The tools should consider the aspects: compatibility, installation, testing and validation.
